SOL LEWITT

The whole work of Sol LeWitt is submitted to a pre-established system, to a « primary » idea which establishes the methods according to which the elements enter into relations between them.

In this way, the artist avoids subjectivity and « the arbitration, the caprice » and the personal taste. Like most conceptual artists, LeWitt takes an attitude of neutrality towards linguistic expressions, his process is purely syntactic which defines a « model » grammar, free nevertheless from obtuse rigidities.

This is the incontested field of the idea, of the mental process which governates the production and the appreciation of Art. Or as LeWitt himself says: « The aim of the artist interested in conceptual art is to make his work be mentally interesting for the spectator, and for this reason, the artist normally wishes this work becomes arid on the emotive plan. »
